Create a Volcano

Safety Rules:

Parent supervision

Take care with fire or heat

Take care with a knife

Take care with glue (It is poisonous)

Do it outdoors

 

Materials you need are:

a wooden base

chicken wire to make a frame

plastic bottle

paper

scissors

glue (made by heating & constantly stirring flour and water in a saucepan)

paintbrushes

paints (e.g. red, orange, black and brown)

vinegar

sodium bicarbonate (also called baking soda)

red food colouring

a spoon

Use the diagram below.

Glue a plastic bottle onto a wooden base. Place the mountain-shaped chicken wire over the bottle and cover it with paper strips dipped in glue made by heating and stirring a flour and water mixture. After a couple of days when it is dry, paint it like a volcano (lots of streaks of red, yellow, brown and black). Place two teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate (also called baking soda), a few drops of red food colouring and lastly, some vinegar into the bottle. Watch your volcano erupt.
